1.  What Is Tinnitus or Ringing The Ear?
It is a noise or ringing in one or both ears.  Sometimes it is even something that is just perceived in a person’s head.  Ringing the ear can be present constantly or come and go, depending upon the severity of the condition.  It is not a disease in itself but a symptom of underlying conditions.  While the statistics vary, approximately 1 in 5 people suffer from this condition.

2.  What Are The Causes Of Tinnitus Or Ringing The Ear?
While there are many factors that can cause ringing the ear, here are some of the more common ones.  The most common is damage to the hairs and bones inside the ear through loud noises.  Loud noises can be from a bomb blast, music concerts, listening to music at too high of levels in headphones for an extended period of time, or even a work environment that is very noisy. In addition to loud noise, age can cause related hearing loss and ringing in the ear.  Wax build up in the ear, stress, depression and TMJ (Temporal Mandibular Joint Disorder) can also be a cause.  Head or neck injuries as well as PTSD can be attributed to it.

3.  Who Is At Risk For Tinnitus Or Ringing The Ear?
Most likely ringing in the ear does not favor any one person over the other.  However, it has been stated that anyone exposed to very loud noises is high at risk.   Caucasian men over 65 years of age are at a higher risk of ringing the ear.  PTSD increases the risk.

4.  Will research find a cure?
At this time, research is still trying to find an answer for ringing the ear.  It is hard to tell when it will happen but through places like the American Tinnitus Association (ATA), further research is being conducted.  The ATA is putting pressure on the US Government to help fund research studies as well raising funds to pay for the research.

5.  What Research On Tinnitus Has Been Conducted?
I was able to locate three research trials from various places.  I am sure there are many more and as I find them, I will update this page.

UC Irvine - In their research study, they started out to prove that they could use high pitched sounds to help mask the ringing in the ear.  However, they learned in the process that by using low pitched sounds such as ocean waves between 40 and 100 Hz, that this treatment was actually effective in helping people. (Study Link)

University Of Massachusetts – The Department of Food Science found that the extract of the Ginkgo Leaf was an effective treatment for ringing in the ear.  (Study Link)

Institute Of Noise Hazards Research – In a 1993 study, a link between Vitamin B12 deficiency and chronic Tinnitus was established.  In 47% of the cases, there was a B12 deficiency. (Study Link)

6.  What helps people deal with Tinnitus Or Ringing The Ear?
While one method may help one person, it does not mean it will work for everyone.  Here are just a few ideas that may help you.

- Accupuncture, Cranio Sacral Therapy or Hypnosis.
- Aromatherapy with Rosemary, Cypress, Lemon or Rose oils.
- Herbs such as Ginkgo Biloba, Black Cohosh, or Melatonin.
- Relaxation Therapy, Massage, Yoga or Meditation.
- Sound Therapy using white noise like ocean wave sounds.
- Avoiding caffeine which may cause Magnesium deficiencies.
- Counseling to help deal with the affects.
- Wearing earplugs when in noisy places or loud concerts.

7.  Do Medications Cause Or Worsen Tinnitus?
According to the Mayo Clinic, there are some medications that may cause or worsen this condition.  There may be more medications that are not listed here, but be sure to check with your doctor.  Here are some that Mayo Clinic denotes. (more info)

9.  Ocean Wave Sounds – White Noise Relief

Sleep Sounds Ocean Waves for I Cant SleepRelaxing Ocean Wave Sounds CD – When I first recorded this CD, my intention was just for relaxation and helping me personally sleep at night.  Little did I realize, that it would help my friend who suffers from ringing the ear.  After reading about the UC Irvine Study (see section 5 above), I now understand why this helps my friend sleep better at night.  If this CD (available on iTunes and Amazon) can help any person suffering from Tinnitus, than that will bring me great joy.  I would love to hear feedback and comments from anyone who finds this CD helpful.  As a result of creating this web page, I understand more what it is that people with ringing in the ear suffer through.  I can only imagine the horrible noise that they endure day after day.
